Bellaire Volunteer Emergency Squad

History as written by Bill Starrett (August 12, 2002)
Bellaire, Ohio

Established 1947

Edward Banan - Safety Director
Robert Secrist

The first E.M.T. class was taught by Captain Bill Woods of the Shadyside Fire Department.  A person wanting to become a certified Emergency Medical Tech must have the state required 60 hours of classroom and practical training after which one must pass a two hour exam.

Bellaire's potential squad was offered a vehicle from the Bauknecht Funeral Home as well as one from the Shadyside Fire Department.  These were both used.

The squad's first place of operation was the Gravel Hill Fire Station.

In order to raise funds for the operation, an Association was formed for this purpose.  Bellaire Volunteer Emergency Squad's first new vehicle was a Dodge and cost $16,500.

Kenneth Heatherington was the squad's first captain.

The squad was moved to various places in town before the city had a new building built at 3200 Hamilton Street.  This was the squad's home for a number of years until the squad was taken over by the Bellaire Fire Department.
