Great Events from History: The Renaissance & Early Modern Era, 1454-1600is the third installment in the ongoing Great Events from History series, which began in 2004 with The Ancient World. Like the rest of the series, the current volumes are enlarged with a significant amount of new material-often more than half the original contents.

Nineteen maps of portions of the ancient world appear grouped together for easy reference in the front of each volume. Accompanying the essays are about 175 illustrations (mostly line art and photographs of busts, sculptures, coins, paintings, and drawings depicting the individual) and 86 maps, succession lists, genealogies, and other sidebars.

Essays cover the world's most important events and developments - from 1701 through 1800 - in the century that witnessed the world's transition to a modern industrial and scientific society.

The current two volumes of The Middle Ages, 477-1443 add 199 new essays to the original 123, for a total of 322 events. These essays were commissioned especially for this series and appear here for the first time. In addition, this series features a new page design, expanded and updated bibliographies, internal and external cross-references, a section containing maps of the medieval world, new appendices and indexes, plus excerpts from primary source documents, regional tables, and numerous illustrations throughout.

The 667 chronologically arranged essays cover the world's most important events and developments from 1801 through 1900 in the century that witnessed the Industrial Revolution, imperialism, colonialism, a realignment of world nations, Romanticism, and the birth of modern physics, astronomy, and other fields.

Included in this set are milestones in the geopolitics of the era - from the Thirty Years' War to the War of the League of Augsburg; from Europeans' arrival in Australia to the establishment of the Louisiana Colony. Also essays address key social developments in daily life: the practice of birth control; the popularization of New World imports such as tobacco, coffee, and chocolate; the establishment of Tokyo's "Floating World" district; the ineradicable devastation of the Middle Passage and African American slavery.

The events covered include the geopolitical events of the era--from World War II (1939-1945) and the Holocaust to the formation of the United Nations and the start of the Cold War in 1945, from the Korean War (1950-1953) to the war in Vietnam (1959-1975). Essays also address important social and cultural developments in literature, the arts, music, law, and social and civil rights legislation.

The events covered include the curriculum-oriented geopolitical events of the era--from World War I (1914-1918) and the Russian Revolution (1917) to the rise of the German Nazi Party, the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), and the eruption of World War II in Europe (1939). Essays also address important social and cultural developments in daily life: major literary movements, significant developments in art and music, trends in immigration, and landmark social legislation.

Notorious Lives includes 637 biographies of notorious personages, from the merely controversial to extremely negative, from ancient times to the present and worldwide, with emphasis on their roles in historical events or impact on law enforcement or popular culture. Scope of coverage includes ancient times to the present, worldwide, with an emphasis on the North American and the West but including figures as diverse as Attila the Hun, Genghis Khan, Idi Amin, Ted Bundy, and Osama Bin Laden.

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization chartered in 1885, the Ohio History Connection carries out history services for Ohio and its citizens focused on preserving and sharing the state’s history.
